Explorer Program

The Weed Police Department started a very active Law Enforcement Explorer Program in late 1996. The program is open to male and female youth between the ages of fourteen and twenty.

The Explorers meet every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. During the meetings, Explorers learn many skills to prepare them for a law enforcement or related career.

Skills include; Criminal Law, Traffic Law, Patrol Procedures, Communications, Crime Prevention, Community Relations, Drug Abuse Prevention, Firearms Training, Ethics, First Aid and C.P.R. Regular Explorer activities include a ride along program and assignments to assist in community events.

Weed Police Department Explorers must be of above average intelligence, must be in good physical condition, have an average school grade of C, or higher, and have no serious criminal history. All Explorers must pass an oral interview and stringent background investigation prior to being admitted. Once accepted, Explorers must learn to function as part of a team.

For further information about the Weed Police Department Explorer Program, call Officer Steve Shannon at 930-5000 or email him at shannon@ci.weed.ca.us.
